Asthma & COPD

Asthma is a common condition that causes coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and breathlessness. Most people with asthma who take the appropriate treatment are able to live normal, active lives, but left untreated, asthma can cause permanent damage to the airways.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive airways disease. The main symptom of COPD is an inability to breathe in and out properly. This is also referred to as airflow obstruction.

Within Your Surgery

Within your surgery, you will have access to dedicated practice nurses who are able to offer care and advice to patients with asthma and COPD. You will also be offered an annual long-term condition review which is an opportunity to have your blood pressure and heart rate checked, a peak flow measurement, inhaler technique and advice.

Within the PCN

We have two dedicated specialist nurses focused on managing respiratory conditions in both adults and children. Clinicians from all eight practices within the PCN, can directly refer patients to their clinics held on Wednesdays and Fridays.

With extensive experience, they’re here to assist clinicians and patients in effectively managing their respiratory health. Their role covers diagnosis, patient education, and medication adjustments, all aimed at improving health outcomes and reducing unexpected care needs. They also coordinate Multidisciplinary Team meetings where they advocate for patients and their families.
